Shirley Smith

Middletown, RI - Shirley A. Smith, 80, of 19 Oak Forest Drive, Middletown, RI, died on Monday, October 31, 2011, at Grand Islander Nursing Home, Middletown.She was the wife of the late Henry A. Smith. Born in Newport, RI on September 7, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Charles P. and Evelyn Ward Kent.Mrs. Smith was a 1952 graduate of the Newport Hospital School of Nursing and went on to be an instructor there. She was treasurer for the Newport Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. Mrs. Smith was an avid reader and gardener and enjoyed nothing more then the time she spent visiting with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Joan Lapham and her husband John of Carson City, NV, Nancy August and her husband Edward, Jr. of Middletown, RI, Michael H. Smith and his wife Terry of Newport, RI, Carolyn Barber and her husband Mark of Lavonia, MI, Carl J. Smith and his wife Sandi of Simsbury, CT, and Steven P. Smith and his wife Christine of Camano Island, WA, her siblings, Edward Kent and his wife Rita of Portsmouth, RI, James Kent of Newport, RI, Alan Kent and his wife Dee of Middletown, RI, Charles Kent and his wife Dorothy of Florida, Marylou Lussier and her husband Marty of Florida, Margaret Mashaw and her late husband Tom of Middletown, RI, fifteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Robert Kent and his wife Estelle, Jean Gawith and her husband Larry and Natalie Brockish. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at 10:00am, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
