SIDNEY D. ROBERTS, SR., 85 of 26 Prescott Hall Road, Newport, RI died December 10, 2012 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. Born in Edenton, North Carolina to the late John A. Roberts and Elizabeth (Holley) Roberts. Mr. Roberts honorably served in the United States Navy for 22 years before retiring. He lived in Newport until his death. Throughout his military career, he was assigned to several Navy destroyers and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War. Upon his retirement from the United States Navy, he was employed as the District Manager for Manpower Inc., New England Region. In 1976, he, along with Thornton Drummond and Marvin Scott, formed a security and janitorial company called MSM Security. Throughout his life, Mr. Roberts was very active in the community. He was an honorary member of several local and national organizations such as the Newport Middletown Fraternal Order of Police Associations; the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund; the National Chamber of Commerce; National Committee to Preserve Social Security Medicare; Seniors' Coalition of Newport; NAACP; Rogers Booster's Club; and America's Little League to name a few. He was a proud member of the Stonemill Masonic Lodge No. 3 and was instrumental in the renovations to the Lodge itself. Mr. Roberts was a loyal and committed member of Community Baptist Church which he loved dearly. Most important to Mr. Roberts was his family. He was happily married for 65 years to the late Marion E. (Williams) Roberts of Newport. He is survived by Sidney D. Roberts, Jr. (California); Sharon L. Roberts (Newport); Gale E. James (Providence); David Roberts (New York); Priscilla Roberts (Georgia); Barry Roberts (Newport); and Terry Roberts (Newport). Predeceased by one son Daniel B. Roberts. He is survived by several siblings: Susan Minnick (New Jersey); Myrtle Rivers (North Carolina); Lula Roberts (Georgia); William "Sonny" Roberts (Ohio); Marvin Roberts (North Carolina); and George Roberts (South Carolina). Several siblings have predeceased him: Percy Roberts, Herman Roberts, James Roberts; Lillian Roberts; Harriet Cunningham and Elinora Roberts. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from 6-8 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.His funeral service will held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 11 am in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd., Newport, RI 02840.Burial with Military honors will be held in Newport Memorial Park, Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI 02840.
