Portsmouth, RI - Sister Mary Cavanagh, FCJ, 69, of Saint Philomena Convent Portsmouth, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at home following an illness. Born in Providence, RI on July 3, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John and Alice Tierney Cavanagh. Sr. Mary was born in Blessed Sacrament Parish in Providence. Sr. Mary entered the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus in 1957 and made her First Vows on July 31, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In 1960 Sr. Mary began her teaching ministry in the primary grades at St. Josephs School in Fitchburg, MA. While in St. Josephs Parish, Sr. Mary was also an Advisor to the Youth Group. Sr. Mary served the people of St. Josephs Parish until she went to Cordoba, Argentina as one of the founding members of the FCJ mission in South America. While in St. Josephs as well as in Argentine, Sr. Mary worked very closely with the LaSalette Fathers. Sr. Mary touched the lives of many people as she ministered as a Pastoral Assistant in Argentina. Upon returning to the United States in 1999. Sr. Mary joined the community of Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus at St. Philomena Convent in Portsmouth, and assisted in the Extended Day Program at St. Philomena School as well as working as a House Mother at Little Flower Home in Tiverton. Sr. Marys kindness touched the livess of many people as she shared her life and her faith with them in her loving, quiet way. She is survived by her brother John Cavanagh of Providence, RI, her sister Alice Goslin of Foster, RI, her sisters in the community and several nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and nephews. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Philomena Auditorium, 324 Corys Lane, Portsmouth.
