Stephen P. Fougere, 94, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on February 23, 2024. He was the husband of Mary (Bottomley) Fougere.
Born in Newport, RI on May 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Cleary) Fougere. Stephen grew up working with his father on their commercial fishing vessel, and thus began his lifelong love of the ocean. He took this love with him to work for the state of RI for over 30 years, first as a Saltwater Game Warden and Conservation Officer and later as the Chief of Law Enforcement. He also served in the US Navy Reserves and reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his retirement from the State, he and his wife continued their commercial fishing work and shared his knowledge with their grandchildren.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary, and their children; Michael Fougere of Florida (Miriam), Katherine Fecteau (Paul) of Portsmouth, Patricia Baker of Newport, Marie Key of Saunderstown, and Annette Fougere Duke of Bristol, a sister Jeannette Perry of Portsmouth, and 11 grandchildren, 20 Great-Grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Stephen is preceded in death by his son Stephen J. Fougere and a son in law, Hugo 'Sandy' Key.
The family would like to share their sincere appreciation to the staff of Dawn Hill and Hope Hospice for the care and support they provided them over the last year.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 28, 2024 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Augustin Church, Carroll Ave, Newport.
