Stuart K. Mills, Jr., Capt., Usn (Ret.)

Newport, RI - Stuart K. Mills, Jr., Capt., USNR (Ret.), 78, of Newport, RI, died peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2015 at home with his family at his side.He was the husband of Anne E. (Sullivan) Mills.Born on April 4, 1937 in Fall River, MA, he was the son of the late Stuart K. Mills, Sr. and Elizabeth (Swift) Mills.Captain Mills was a 30 year veteran of the United States Naval Reserve. He was a 1958 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering and received his MBA from the University of RI in 1970.During an engineering career that spanned 41 years, he worked at Globe Manufacturing Company in Fall River, MA, American Tourister in Warren, RI and most recently at Acushnet Company in Fairhaven, MA, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Association of Facilities Engineers, the Energy Consortium and the South Coast Energy Procurement Group. He was a past chairman of the Newport Waterfront Commission and served as Chairman of the Newport School Advisory Committee. After his retirement, he proudly served on the Board of Directors of the Seamen's Church Institute. He was an avid sailor, spending some of his happiest times sharing his passion with his children and grandchildren and with his beloved Annie on their Catalina 30 "Icefire".In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his children, Kathleen M. Dunn and her husband, John, of Newport, RI, Timothy J. Mills, of Middletown, RI, and Stephanie L. Mills, of Portsmouth, RI; his grandchildren, John E. Dunn, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, Patrick T. Dunn and Thomas S. Dunn; his great-grandchildren, Hailey K. Dunn and John B. Dunn; and his brother, John W. Mills and his wife, Margaret Balassone, of Saranac Lake, NY. and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Richard E. Mills.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 PM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 9:00 AM in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Street at Memorial Blvd., Newport, RI.
