Portsmouth, RI - Sumner Curtis Littlefield, Jr., YNCS, USN ret., 70, of 64 Dorothy Drive, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, MA. Born in Brockton, MA, on December 10, 1935, he was the son of the late Sumner Curtis and Edner Parker Littlefield, Sr.Mr. Littlefield was a graduate of Bristol High School in Bristol, CT. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1954, veteran of the Korean War, the Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1974 as a Senior Chief Yeoman. He had served on the USS Robinson DD 562; USS Fearless MSO 442, at the Pentagon and at the War College , Newport, RI. He obtained a B.A. in Business in 1983 from Roger Williams University while working for the McLaughlin Research Corporation of Middletown for 17 years in configuration management. Mr. Littlefield was very active in the Boy Scouts of America working most recently at the BSA Council office in Providence. He started with the Cub Scouts as an adult leader for Pack 1 in Portsmouth from 1979-1983 before moving to Boy Scout Troop 5 in Portsmouth where he was a scout master for 4 years, and was voted National Scout Master of the Year in 1985. He received the Silver Beaver Award, a distinctive award of merit, the Tomahawk Award, was a camp master at BSA Camp Yagoo of Rhode Island. He also twice lead Troop 5 of Portsmouth to the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia.He was also a member and past president of the Portsmouth Lions Club, a member of the St. Paul Lodge of Masons, and a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown, RI. He is survived by three sons, John C. Littlefield of Tucson, AZ, Jeffrey C. Littlefield, BU1, USN of Gulfport, MS, Michael S. Littlefield of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters, Bonnie St. Jean of Pawtucket, RI , and Kristine A. Littlefield-Durant of Portsmouth, RI, a brother, Earl E. Littlefield of Seneca, SC, a sister, Ann L. Cowles of Branford, CT, and seven grandchildren, Jordan Littlefield of Tucson, AZ, Ashley Littlefield of Atkinson, Il, Katelyn Littlefield of Portsmouth, RI, David Littlefield of Portsmouth, RI, Melissa St. Jean of Pawtucket, RI, Gregory St. Jean of Pawtucket, RI, and Aidan Riley Durant of Portsmouth, RI His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 22, at 10:00 am in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth., RI Burial will be in Colebrook Cemetery in Whitman, MA. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 21, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home.
