Newport, - Suzanne Marie Henriette Aubois, 92, of 86 Washington Street Newport, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Jean Aubois.Born in Lyon, France, on January 9, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Charles P. and the late Marie F Fromenteau Welte.Madame Aubois had come to the United States as a young girl and was educated at the former Abbot Academy, Philips-Andover Academy of Mass. She returned to France during World War II and since she could speak English, she worked with the French Underground. Having a Radio in her Attic she was able to listen to the BBC and announce the invasion of Normandy and France?s liberation to her home Village, Les Bordes. She Graduated from the Ecole Normale Sociale in France receiving her B S Degree. Madame Aubois returned to America in 1949, and earned her Masters Degree from Rhode Island College.Madame Aubois was a private tutor of French for many years as well as teaching French at The Portsmouth Abbey School of Portsmouth, the Former Elmhurst Academy of Portsmouth, and the former Vernon Court Junior College of Newport. Madame Aubois had also translated many documents and offical papers for various people and dignataries over the years.Mrs. Aubois was one of the founders of Alliance Francaise in Newport. She was a former trustee and Member of the Board of Directors of the Newport Community Health Care Center. Madame Aubois was a member of the Newport Historical Society, and one of the first members of the Point Association of Newport. She was a member of the Newport Art Museum. Her love of French Cooking led her to teaching it at the Swinbourne School of Arts in Newport and adapted the French Cuisine to the American Audience being a precursor of Julia Childs. In 2002 The Alliance Francaise of Newport during their 50th Aniversary honored Madame Aubois and her sister Mrs. Marthe Whalon for being instrumental in The Foundation of the Newport Chapter. Madame was also a Docent for the Newport Restoration Foundation at the Samuel Whitehorn Home on Thames St. Newport, RI.Her home gardens were noted for their beauty and were open to the public during the Point Association Tours.She is survived by her son Vincent Aubois of Jamestown, RI, her daughter Marie Coburn-Gill of West Springfield, MA, her sister Marthe Whalon of Fall River, MA, three granddaughters Brigitte Buxton of Burrilville, RI, Suzanne Aubois of Jamestown, RI, and Sara Aubois of Newport, RI, three grandsons Thomas Coburn of West Springfield, MA, John Coburn of Jersey City, NJ, Edward Coburn of Somerville, MA, and six great grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her husband Jean Aubois and her son Jean Francois Aubois. Her funeral will be held Friday, February 11, 2005, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in Portsmouth Abbey Chapel, Coreys Lane, Portsmouth, RI.Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery in Jamestown, RI.
