Thomas McDonald, 55, of 91 Cottage Ave, Portsmouth, died Friday, August 25, 2006 at St. Anne?s Hospital, Fall River, MA after a short illness. He was the husband of Rebecca Mudd McDonald.Born in Newport on May 14, 1951, he was the son of Margaret Murphy McDonald of Portsmouth and the late Thomas G. McDonald.Mr. McDonald just retired from NUWC after 36 years of service to the US government. He was a 1969 graduate of Portsmouth High School, and then joined the US Navy. After his active duty, he continued his work at the Newport Naval Base in various positions in the communications divisions including: the Naval Data Automated Facility and most recently at NUWC for the last 11 years. He retired last year as a logistics engineer but his career saw many different positions. His work at NUWC included a position as Senior Configuration Management Specialist and an important role in the work required during the upgrades during Y2K.Outside of work Tom loved the outdoors. He was a Life Member of the Seaconnet Sportsmans Club, and served as its President twice and was also a longtime Trustee. Over the last 10 years, Tom was the organizer of the ?May Fishing Contest?. He was also a member of the FOPA since 1989.He is survived by his wife Rebecca, his mother and four siblings, Michael T. McDonald of Portsmouth, Karen Durfee of Tiverton, Colleen McDonald of Harwinton, CT and John McDonald of Middletown.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 29 at 9:00 a.m. from Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Catherine?s Church, 74 Simmons Road, Little Compton. Burial will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Little Compton.Calling hours will be held Monday, August 28, from 5-8pm in the Connors Funeral Home.Donations may be made to the Hospice Outreach 502 Bedford Street, Fall River, MA 02721
