Middletown, RI - Thomas Paul Raffa, Jr. 73, of Middletown died unexpectedly Monday, August 13, 2012 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. He was the former husband of the late Sheila Ann (Fontaine) Raffa.Born on January 14, 1939, in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Ruth Patricia (Judge) Raffa and Thomas Paul Raffa Sr. and stepson of the late Agnes Faye (Bland) Raffa.Mr. Raffa was a 1958 graduate of Rogers High School where he excelled in basketball. He served in the United States Army as a Sergeant. Mr. Raffa was a Newport Police officer from March 23, 1964 until retiring as a patrolman on March 23, 1984. After his retirement he continued to work along with his son in a partnership as a general contractor and remodeler for T. Raffa Construction. Mr. Raffa was a member of the F.O.P.He is survived by his four sons, Thomas P. Raffa III and his wife Heidi of Sacramento, CA, David M. Raffa and his wife Sheila of Naples, FL, Brian T. Raffa of Newport, RI, and Terence D. Raffa and his wife Sue of Middletown, RI, his brother Salvatore "Tore" Raffa and his wife Janie of Newport, RI, his sister Carol Anderson of Colorado, his uncle Anthony Raffa of Middletown, RI and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of eight grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with his beloved granddaughter Quincy who gave him the name Bumpa.He was the brother of the late Russell Raffa.Calling hours will be held on, Friday, August 17, 2012, from 4:00 - 7:00pm Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at 10:00AM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Newport, RI Police Relief Fund Association, 784 Middle Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
