Portsmouth, RI - Vera Collins Mason, born September 15, 1925 in Brookview, MD, died after a bout with cancer on October 22, 2005.She was the wife of James M. Mason of Portsmouth, RI and they were married 47 years. She is the daughter of the late Minos Henry and Edith Murphy Collins. She graduated from Framingham State College with BS and MS degrees and worked as a home economist for the Natick Laboratory Research Center. She was a past member of the Brookview Methodist Church in Maryland and attended the Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown, RI.She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Matron of the Orient Chapter No. 31 in Framingham, MA, and a member of the Martha Washington Chapter No.18 in Warren, RI. She served for 3 years as the Grand Organist of the Grand Chapter of RI. She was a Governor of the Newport Hospital Corporation, a member of the Portsmouth Garden Club, and a volunteer for Child Family Services of Newport County for over 20 years.Besides her husband, she is survived by her brother George William Collins and his wife Diane of Laurel, DE, her brother in law Arthur M. Mason and his wife Shirley Mason of Framingham, MA, her brother in law Howard M. Mason and his wife Carol Mason of Randolph, MA, her sister in law Lois Vashaw and her husband Murray Vashaw of Lancaster, NH, her sister in law Shirley Blacher of Stoneham, MA and several nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2005, at 11:00am in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday in the funeral home from 5-8pm. A ritual by the Martha Washington Chapter No. 18 of the Order of Eastern Star will be held at 7pm. Burial will follow on Friday, October 28, 2005, at 11:00am in Edgell Grove Cemetery with a service in the Edgell Memorial Chapel in Framingham, MA.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Framingham Heart Study Program, Mount Wayte Ave, Framingham, MA 01702, or to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
