DORCHESTER, MA - Vernon Leslie Stoddard, Jr., 78, of 2262 Dorchester Street, Dorchester, MA, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at home. Born in Cranston, RI on January 31, 1927, he was the son of the late Vernon Leslie and Blanche Fox Stoddard. Vernon attended Rogers High School and received his high school diploma from Central High School in Providence, RI. He also attended the former Gradwahl School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Vernon served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a short order cook for various restaurants in the Greater Boston area. He was an avid reader and loved his classical music and doing crossword puzzles. He is survived by his daughter Susan Elaine Hall and her husband Hugh of Saunderstown, RI, his sister Blanche Norma Stoddard of Newport, RI, and his step grandchildren Alison Berry of Exeter, RI, Michael Hall of Brookline, MA, and David Hall of West Warwick, RI.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at 11:00 AM in St. Georges Episcopal, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth. Donations in Vernons name may be made to the American Lung Association, 298 West Exchange Stret, Providence, RI 02903 or to St. Georges Episcopal, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport, RI 02840. Funeral arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.
