Violet Jane Morgan

Violet Jane (Martineau) Morgan, of Newport passed away with her family by her side on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Village House Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Harold George Morgan. Violet Jane was born on August 25, 1924 in Woonsocket, RI, daughter of the late Louis Joseph and Arona Mae (Burns) Martineau. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Fall River. While in school she worked at Howard Johnson's in Portsmouth doing the payroll. After moving to Newport, she worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone Company on Spring Street during WWII and the Korean Wars. Violet met her husband in Newport and they were married after the war on June 29, 1946.While raising their children, she worked as a teacher's aide at Coggeshall Elementary School and was also a Cub Scout den mother. After their children were raised, Violet worked as a tour guide at the Hunter House for the Preservation Society of Newport County. Violet was an avid history buff and loved rug hooking and reading.Violet was preceded in death by her sister Alice Mae Chauvin and her brother Louis Conboy Martineau.She is survived by her sister Eleanor Mildred St. Laurent of Florida.Violet leaves behind her five children Gail A. Shepherd and her husband Michael of Newport, Harold G. Morgan, Jr. of Middletown,Glenna Jane McCaffrey and her husband William of Jamestown, Todd A. Morgan of Hope Valleyand Paul F. Morgan and his wife Susan (Benisch) of Portsmouth. She is also the loving grandmother of , Ian and Meredith Shepherd, Neil and Nolan McCaffrey, Jillian Sutcliffe and her husband John and Karli Morgan, Kristina and Kelsey Morgan. Violet was also the great-grandmother of Emma Jane Sherrod and Jack Sutcliffe.The family would like to thank all those at Newport Hospital and especially the Village House for their love and care.Visitation will be held Tuesday Morning from 8:30AM to 9:30AM in the funeral homeHer funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at 9:30AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Augustin's Church, Corner of Carroll and Harrison Avenues, Newport.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.Memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics, RI, 370 George Washington Highway, Smithfield, RI 02917 or the Village House, 70 Harrison Avenue, Newport, RI 02840 or St. Augustin's Church, 2 Eastnor Road, Newport, RI 02840.
