MIDDLETOWN, RI ? Virginia L. Forrest Heffernan, in Newport Hospital on July 7, 2007, at the age of 89. A resident of the Grand Islander Healthcare Center, she died from complications associated with a recent hip fracture. Born on July 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Edwin R. Forrest and Elizabeth H. Dwyer Forrest. Mrs. Heffernan was the wife of devoted husband, Tom, by whom she was predeceased in 1987.She is survived by her son, Thomas M. Heffernan and his wife Roberta of Tiverton, and daughter, Virginia H. Heffernan of North Smithfield. She is the sister of E. Raymond Forrest of Tiverton, Muriel H. Porter of Newport, Audrey J. Cookson of Marstons Mills, MA, and the late June and Donald Forrest. She is also survived by her grandson, Timothy M. Heffernan and his wife Abigail of Smithtown, NY, as well as three nieces and eight nephews.Mrs. Heffernan was a homemaker who, during the early years of her marriage enjoyed the challenge of golf with her husband and participating in social activities at the Tiverton Yacht Club. In subsequent years, she relished the commonplace community rituals involved with life on Aquidneck Island.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 9:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Augustin?s Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial will take place at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, from 4-8pm in the funeral home.Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Newport Hospital Foundation, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840.
