EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - Virginia May Stephens Knowe, 91, formerly of 7 Berkeley Terrace, Newport, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Evergreen House Health Center, East Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Kenneth R. Knowe. Born in New Bedford, MA on February 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sydney and Lillian Dakin Stephens. Mrs. Knowe and her husband Kenneth were married on July 7, 1942 in St. Georges Episcopal Church in Newport. Mr. Knowe was killed in action on October 8, 1944 during World War II in Germany. Virginia worked at the Newport Hospital as an L.P.N. for 2 years from 1942 to 1944, then at Frenchs Nursing Home from 1946 to 1961 and from 1961 to 1980 she worked at the Baptist Home of Rhode Island which is now known as the John Clarke Retirement Center. Mrs. Knowe belonged to St. Georges Church, she was also a Chaplin for over 25 years for Aquidneck Chapter #7, Order of the Eastern Star. Which is now known as Nestell Chapter, No. 6 Order of The Eastern Star. She was a memberof the American Legion Auxiliary #7 of Newport, RI, in which she celebrated 50 years of service back in October of 1986. Mrs. Knowe was also a member of the Advisory Board of Rainbow Girls Assembly and former member of the Newport Preservation Society. She leaves several cousins in England, Canada and the rest in the United States. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at 10:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers donations in Virginias name may be made to St. Georges Episcopal, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
