Wallace H. Baines, 97, of Portsmouth, RI went to meet his wife of 68 years, Claire Jane Baines, on Sunday, March 22, 2015 after a brief illness. Born November 4, 1917 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late William Baines and Alma Smith Baines. Wallace joined the US Navy at age 23 and went through boot camp in Newport, RI, serving honorably for nearly 30 years as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, retiring in 1968 while stationed at the Newport Naval Hospital as Command Chief. Wallace was a WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam veteran, serving as a medic with the US Marines in France and with the Fleet Marine Forces in the Pacific theatre during WWII, and was awarded the Bronze Star. After retiring, he worked as the NETC Intramural Athletic Director at Gym 109 in Newport, for 13 years. He is survived by his children, Claire Clark of Seminole, FL, Wallace Baines of Jacksonville, FL, Linda Martin of Middletown, RI, and Steven Baines of Middletown, RI, as well as six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Wallace happily spent the remaining years of his life in Life Guidance Care at Atria Aquidneck Place in Portsmouth, RI. He is remembered for his warm smiles, which he was always willing to share. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday March25, 2015 from 1 to 2pm in the Memorial Funeral Home at 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours at 2pm, in the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, RI.
