Walter Erskine McAlpine, of Middletown, RI, died at Forest Farm Healthcare Center at the age of 95 on December 10, 2013.His wife Julie (Carlson) McAlpine survives him, while his parents and his sister, Jeannette Van Eck, preceded him in death. He leaves many nieces and nephews and younger family members, especially Dianne (Van Eck) Johnson and Peter Van Eck.He was a World War II veteran who served in the Navy with a torpedo specialty having worked at the Torpedo Station in Newport. Walter went to Providence College on the G.I. Bill. He became a teacher helping to start the English-as-a-Second-Language program in the Newport School System. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Navy League, a member of the Naval War College Foundation, an active member of the P.C. Alumni Association having served as President of the Newport Chapter. Walter also worked Saturdays as a receptionist at the front desk of the Newport Officers Club. He especially enjoyed social activities, gourmet foods and travel.Calling hours are respectfully omitted.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 9 am in St. Lucy Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Lucy's Church.Burial with Military Honors will be private.
