Walter M. Conley Middletown, RI - Walter M. Conley, 88, of 65 Crest Street, Middletown, RI, formerly of Tuckerman Avenue, Middletown, died Friday, April 2, 2010 at the John Clarke Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.He was the husband of 50 years, to the late Elizabeth Ann Chapman Conley, who died in November of 2009. Born in Newport, RI on April 13, 1921, he was the son of the late Frank H. and Fatima Reeves Conley.Mr. Conley worked as a planner and estimator on the US Naval Base in the Public Works department for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII in the North African, Scicily, and Italian Campaigns. He was a Communicant of St. Marys Church. Mr. Conley was the proud owner of the first wetsuit in Newport. He was a life member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and during the 1960s and 1970s he was a member of the Newport Saltwater Fishing Club. Mr. Conley prided himself as being an all around handi-man and an accomplished carpenter. He enjoyed cooking and especially eating Irish bread and cheesecake. He is survived by two daughters Kathleen Havey and her husband Don of Middletown, RI, and Maureen Andrew and her husband Rick of Greene, ME, and four grandchildren Holly K. Andrew, Nathan C. Andrew, Rosemarie E. Havey, and Margaret H. Havey.He was also the brother of the late Frank Conley, Reeves Conley, and Jeanette Seigrist.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 9:00 am in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport.Burial will be in Island Annex Cemetery in Newport.Calling hours are omitted.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, 02871.The family would like to thank the staffs of the John Clarke Nursing Center and VNS Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care they provided Walter.
