Newport, RI - Walter T. Calcutt, 76, of Newport, RI, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Miriam Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of Joan Lee Marren Calcutt. Born in Woonsocket, RI on September 27, 1932, he was the son of the late Walter Thomas and Dorothy Page Calcutt.Mr. Calcutt served in the United States Army in Germany. After the Army, Walter went to work as a mechanic for R.I. Vending Company for 20 years and then worked in the maintenance department for the Newport School Department for 20 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Weenat Shassutt Tribe of Redman. Walter played in adult sports in Newport City Leagues for Aquidneck Basketball and Redmen Softball. He was an avid New York Yankee fan and a Providence College fan. Besides his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his sister Doris Ryan of Attleboro, MA, and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Frederick Calcutt, Robert Calcutt and Edmund Calcutt. His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 10:00 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Island Annex Cemetery in Newport.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009, from 4-7pm in the funeral home.
