Wayne A. Seveney, 58, of 314 Middle Road, Portsmouth, RI and of Puenta Arinas, Costa Rica, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick, RI. Born in Fall River, MA on April 10, 1947, he was the son of Harrison Seveney of Portsmouth and the late Susie Wallen Seveney. Wayne Seveney graduated from De La Salle Academy in Newport, RI and attended Merrimack College for two years. He then enlisted in the US Army and served two tours in Viet Nam with the 1st Infantry. After his three year commitment he returned to school and graduated from Roger Williams College, but his military service continued through the completion of the ROTC program. He became a commissioned officer in the US Army and served for three more years, at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and Ft. Lewis, Washington, in the Armored divisions. Wayne returned to Newport and began his career as a police officer. During his twenty five years with the Newport Police Department he completed a Masters Degree program at Salve Regina in Administration of Justice and a Law Degree from the University of New England. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant. He was a member of the FOP and was Past President. After his retirement, he enjoyed running and weightlifting, and working at the Newport County YMCA. In September of 2004 he moved to Costa Rica and enjoyed retirement on the beach. He is survived by a son Timothy Seveney of West Warwick, RI, a daughter Kirtley Seveney of Newport, RI, a brother Bruce Seveney of Portsmouth, RI, his father Harrison Seveney of Portsmouth, RI, and his former wife Elizabeth C. Seveney of Portsmouth, RI. His funeral will be held Tuesday, July 12, at 10:00am St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Pocassett Hill Cemetery in Tiverton.Calling hours will be held Monday, July 11 from 6-8 in the Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
