William Andrew Simmons

William Andrew Simmons Middletown, RI - William Andrew Simmons, 91, of 385 Third Beach Rd, Middletown, RI, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Whitehead Simmons. Born in Port Chester, NY on September 9, 1918, William joined the US Navy in World War 2 and served in the Pacific Theater. He was aboard the USS Bennington and the USS Essex during his active duty. William continued in the US Navy and Naval Reserve for several more years after the war, before continuing his career at the Torpedo Station until his retirement. He also worked as a bartender on Thames St for several years. William was an avid stamp collector and was a member of a local stamp club. He also enjoyed bowling and gardening, and was a member of the NARFE. He is survived by a son William Simmons Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Houston, TX and a granddaughter Jennifer Simmons, also of Houston. Calling hours will be held Monday, December 28 from 5:00-7:00 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A private burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
