Portsmouth, RI - William B. Amado, 88, of 64 Buckwheat Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, died on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown.He was the husband of the late Lucille (Correia) Amado. Born in Newport, RI on August 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Leo B. and Candida (Monteiro) Amado.Bill grew up in Newport and was drafted out of Rogers High School and served in the Army Air Corps for nearly 3 years. He served in the Pacific, landing on dozens of islands and ending up in Okinawa. At a special ceremony on June 16th, 2002, Bill and several of his fellow military veterans received their long overdue Rogers High School 1944 graduation diplomas. Congressman Patrick Kennedy was the guest speaker. Upon his return from military service, Bill worked for the City of Newport briefly and then began his career with the family business, a bartender for the former "Leo's First and Last Stop". In semi-retirement he worked for the James L. Maher Center for several years then at Raytheon. Most recently he has been a school bus monitor for Portsmouth schools for the last 13 years. He is a member of the Cape Verdean Men's Club in Newport and parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church serving on the church vestry on three different occasions. He is survived by his children, Karen McGee and her husband Barry and Cheryl Abney and her husband Marvin all of Newport, RI, William Amado and his wife Carmen of Seaford, VA, and Paul B. Amado and his wife Lisa of Portsmouth, RI; his brother Theodore Amado and his wife Lorraine of Portsmouth, RI, and his sister Amelia Ferreira of Newport, RI, eight grandchildren, Stephen Nazario, Danica McGee, Lee Abney, Christian Abney, Tess Abney, Nicole Kethavath, Cheryl Amado and Sydney Amado, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013, from 4-7pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at 10:00am, in St. John the Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport.
