William "Bill" V. Golas, Jr. of Newport, R.I. died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 7, 2013 in Chengdu, People's Republic of China. Born in Worcester MA, Bill moved to Newport as an infant where he then resided for the remainder of his life. He was the son of the late William V. Golas, Sr. and Mary J. (Colaluca) Golas. Bill graduated from Rogers High School. He attended Brown University and Providence College where he completed his undergraduate studies. While at Brown University he was an active member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He earned his advanced degrees from the University of Southern California and Bryant University with distinct honors. A recipient of numerous academic awards, he was invited to join Delta Mu Delta's International Honor Society in Business.Bill worked in R.I. state government for the last thirty-five years. For over two decades, he served as Senior Budget Analyst for the Department of Management and Budget. During his tenure, he assisted in budget preparation and supported personnel in numerous departments. Bill was an active staff affiliate in the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO). His keen intellect and analytical prowess, combined with his caring spirit were the hallmarks of his professional success. Bill served as an adjunct professor at Bryant University, Fisher College and Community College of Rhode Island where he taught Management, Economics and Marketing. His passion for teaching and learning was evident to all those who knew him.Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed a wide range of athletic interests. A member of the Amateur Bowlers Tour, he participated in numerous tournaments each year. He also enjoyed playing on various adult basketball teams. A proficient swimmer, Bill was a past member of the Newport YMCA Water Polo Team. Throughout the years, he participated in the New England Masters, competed in Triathlons and was certified in SCUBA as a Deep Diver. He is survived by his devoted cousins, Joan Sousa of Rumford, R.I. and Frances R. King of Newport R.I. and his beloved godchildren, Jonathan Sousa of Seekonk, MA. and Darren Sousa of Rumford, R.I.
