William Clinton Unangst

William Clinton Unangst, 73, of 46 Goldenrod Drive, Middletown, RI, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Tuft Medical Center, Boston, MA. He was the husband of Constance Mary Shea Unangst.Born in Wellsboro, PA on May 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur and Ellen Short Unangst.Lt. William Unangst was a 20 year veteran of the US Navy. His service began in Buffalo, NY and he climbed up the ranks, serving at sea for over seven years. Lt. Unangst was a veteran of the Vietnam War and had tours throughout the Mediterranean and Pacific. His last assignment was aboard the USS Boston. After his retirement from active duty, William continued to serve his community, first as an employee of the City of Newport, then as a counselor for the RI Department of Labor and Training, a job he enjoyed for 6 years before illness forced a second retirement. His enjoyment of this job led him to receive his Masters Degree in counseling from Salve Regina. Eight years ago, he was the beneficiary of a heart transplant, and after a healthy recovery, he returned the gift by advocating for organ banks and organ donation.William was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. As a dedicated parishioner, he served as the former President of the Jesus Saviour School Parents Guild and the Jesus Saviour School Board. He also enjoyed coaching the schools basketball team. Over the years, William and Connie enjoyed travelling the world and spending winters in Florida.He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Constance Connie Unangst of Middletown, RI, his daughter Lori Ann MacDonald and her husband Stephen of Portsmouth, RI, a son Jeffrey William Unangst of Middletown, RI, a daughter Janet Ann Unangst Jagelski and her husband Edward Jagelski of Newport, RI, and a son Gregg Clinton Unangst and his wife Dawn of Culloden, WV. He is also survived by a sister Suzanne Thomas of Mansfield, PA, and four granddaughters Alexandra, Molly, Ellen and Abigail MacDonald. He was preceded in death by his brother James Unangst and a sister Eileen Smith. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 30, at 10:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 29 from 4:00-8:00 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Military Officers Association of America MOAA Scholarship Fund, PO Box 320910, Alexandria, VA 22320-4910 or visit www.moaa.org, to assist children and their efforts towards higher education.
