William Henry Chase

Newport, - William Henry Chase, 84, of 133 Carroll Avenue, Newport, died Saturday, February 12, 2005 at home. He was the husband of Beulah Davenport Babbitt Chase. Born in Newport, RI on November 14, 1920, he was the son of the late Laurence and Eunice Johnson Chase. Mr. Chase for thirty years had been a Photo Xerographer for the Naval Under Water Systems Center, retiring in 1975. Mr. Chase was in the United States Army during World War II. He flew 43 missions in a B-25 in the European Theatre and was a top turret gunner. He made emergency repairs while inflight. Part of his job was to watch the instrument board to see that engines were running smoothly. He also worked with the ground crew making inspections, repairs to engines, aircrarft and pre flight checks. Mr. Chase was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Green Bridge Sporting Club. He was an avid gardner. Besides his wife of sixty-two years, he is survived by two sons William Henry Chase Jr. of Warren, ME and Jonathan H. Chase of Newport, RI, his daughter Cherilyn Boyd of Duxbury, MA, his brother Alden Chase of Newport, RI, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 11:00am in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Service Hospice of Bristol and Newport Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
