Middletown, RI - William Lewis Cardoza, Jr., 81, of 4A Bristol Road, Middletown, RI, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 21, 2009 in Middletown, RI. He was the former husband of Helen Berthold Fitzgerald.Born in Portsmouth, RI, on December 28, 1927, he was the son of the late William L. Cardoza, Sr and Angelina Rego Cardoza .Mr. Cardoza was a painter and contractor for many years. He owned and operated his own Rug Cleaning business and was also a former co-owner of the Gateway Motel. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was an avid chess player and loved his trips to Foxwoods with his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor. He loved playing in and following the stock market. He enjoyed helping other people and loved spending time sitting under his tree drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee.He is survived by his daughter Susan Lynn Cardoza Porter and her husband Steven of Preston, CT , his daughter Deborah Lee Cardoza of Middletown, RI, his son Stephen James Cardoza of Summerville, SC, his son David Kenneth Cardoza and his wife Jolene of Rockville, MD, his brother Robert Cardoza of Portsmouth, RI, his brother Arthur Cardoza of Middletown, RI, his sister Lorraine Cardoza OBrien of Middletown, RI, his grandson Christopher Porter, his grandson Daniel Cardoza, his granddaughter Jennifer Porter Denton, all of Preston, CT, his grandson Tyler Logan Cardoza, his grandson Stephen J. Cardoza, Jr., both of Summerville, SC, his nieces Darlene Cardoza Daugherty of Middletown and Robin Medeiros of Somerset, Ma, He had one great granddaughter, Skylar Christine Roan. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 8:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am, in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2009, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
