William Martin Haney, Jr., 72Beloved husband, father and dedicated teacherCENTERVILLE, MA - William Martin Haney, Jr., formerly of Portsmouth and Newport Rhode Island, died Thursday at Beth Israel Hospital after a brief illness.Mr. Haney was born in Riverside, Rhode Island and educated at LaSalle Academy, Providence College and Brown University where he developed a lifelong passion for learning and teaching. After serving in the Army and as an industrial chemist at Kaiser Aluminum, he became a high school teacher and coach. For most of the next 30 years he taught Chemistry and Oceanography at Portsmouth Abbey School. There he also started and coached the golf team, served as coach of the hockey and sailing teams, and acted as a housemaster. Bill Haney enjoyed his life fully, laughing easily and often, and finding joy in the company of his friends and family, with the tiller of a wooden sailboat in his hand, swinging a pitching wedge, plunging into a piece of apple pie or quietly reading a political biography.A wise, loyal and generous man, he was the devoted husband of Irene Sullivan Haney for 42 years, the loving father of William M. Haney III, of Wayland, MA, Patricia DiRuggiero of Bethesda, MD, and Jonathan Haney of Bethesda, MD, and delighted in his grandchildren Finn, Jessie, Margaret, Amelia and Julia. His sister Marguerite Lough of Osterville, MA also survives him. Bill and Irene moved to Centerville, Massachusetts in 1993.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at the Portsmouth Abbey Church, 285 Cory?s Lane, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Burial will follow at the Portsmouth Abbey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod or the Haney Fellowship Program at Portsmouth Abbey School.
