Portsmouth, RI - William G. Lawrence, Jr., 80, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Newport Hospital.He was the devoted husband of Patricia Murphy Lawrence for 53 years. Born in Newport, RI on May 22, 1929, he was the son of the late William and Grace Neveu Lawrence.Bill a former Middletown resident worked for J. T. OConnell, Inc. for thirty eight years. He was a member of Teamsters Local 251. He retired to Jupiter, FL where he spent eleven years with his family. He was a former member of the Rhode Island National Guard and a current member of the Newport Lodge of Elks and was also a former member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Linda King and her husband Robert of Alpharetta, GA, his son Timothy J. Lawrence and his wife Beth of Jupiter, FL, as well as two loved grandchildren, Timothy P. King and Kristen King of Alpharetta, GA, his sister Barbara J. Deveau of Newport and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Jacqueline Wheeler and Faith Unger. His funeral will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2009, from 3-6 pm in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth RI 02871.
