Middletown, RI - Wirt Cummings Thayer, CDR, USN, Ret. Blenheim Newport, Middletown, RI, formerly of Greenough Place, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, February 05, 2013 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Shirley Munroe Thayer. Born in Bristol, NH on Mar. 31, 1923, he was the son of the late Harold T. and Gladys (Keene) Thayer.Mr. Thayer graduated from high school in Bristol, NH. He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy in 1947. He served as an naval officer for 23 years in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He taught for a brief period of time at the Tiverton Jr./Sr. High. He was also employed as the Office Manager of the Newport Daily News from 1971 to 1989. He served as President and Treasurer of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, Newport, RI and was a member of VFW and American Legion, in Bristol, NH.Mr. Thayer enjoyed bowling and skiing and was an avid tennis player.He was also active as the vice president and head usher of the Channing Memorial Church. He is survived by his children, Brooks Thayer and his wife Linda of Saunderstown, RI, Marc Thayer and his wife Laurie of Middletown, RI, William Thayer and his wife Betsy of Bristol, NH, Thomas Thayer and his wife Priscilla of Portsmouth, RI, and Susan Thayer and her husband Tim Cropley of Waterbury, VT. Mr Thayer also leaves six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
