Between inflation and the ongoing fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, times are tough. Gas prices are high and so are the prices of the most basic necessities.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center has always been a vital source of resources for anyone that is struggling in the Aquidneck Island community and beyond. This organization is especially important right now. “As I’m typing, the MLK’s lobby is filled with people and we have more queuing outside, all waiting to use the food pantry.” Says Director of Development for the MLK Center, Alyson Novick in an email. “The price of food has skyrocketed and our pantry shelves are pretty bare.” She continues.

Thanks to some generous friends of the center, the organization currently has a matching campaign in place where every dollar and every pound of donated food is matched.

Alyson is urging anyone who can to donate whatever they can to put meals on tables of people across our community. “Every can of food matters, every dollar matters.” She says.

And for anyone who finds themself in need of help, Alyson says that this is what the MLK Center is here for: to help.

“We understand everyone is feeling the pinch.” Alyson says. She urges anyone who is need of help to come to the MLK Center. “We can help. We treat everyone with dignity and respect.” She continues.

According to the MLK Center’s website, 654,076 meals were served in 2021. There were 1,172 grocery deliveries to homebound seniors and 11,476 hot breakfasts were served.

The MLK Center not only provides food services. It also offer educational programs for children and adults. From Spanish cooking classes to kids receiving books monthly from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

The MLK is also celebrating being 100 years old this year! To celebrate, there will be a party on Thursday, September 8 th at Fort Adams Trust. The celebration is presented by BedJet and the Aramli Foundation. Thanks to them and other generous sponsors, the MLK is able to offer tiered ticket pricing for those who need it. Pay what you can: $100, $50 or $0 per ticket.

The event will feature food stations, the renowned World Premier Band , fire pits, lawn games and more!

This is a fun, casual-dress, 18+ party under the big tent on the North Lawn. It’s not a fundraiser.
