Listen to Anderson Cooper’s Podcast, “All There Is”

A poster for all there is with anderson cooper

Anderson Cooper is an award-winning journalist who from afar, might seem to have everything: stellar career, two beautiful boys, money, adored by pretty much everyone. However, Anderson’s personal life has drastically been marked by loss. When Anderson was just ten years old, he lost his father. At 21 years of age he lost his 23-year-old brother to suicide. In 2014, he lost his childhood nanny who was like a mother to him. In 2019 he lost his actual mother.

This past year, he started to box up his mother’s things. He soon realized that mixed in with his mother’s stuff was his father and brother’s things as well. Anderson was struck all over again by grief for every single loved one that he lost.

In an effort to understand grief as well as to move forward with his life, Anderson decided to create a podcast, his first ever. In it, he details his experiences with grief, and to talk to others who have also lost loved ones. Anderson is raw and open with his grief.

As of publishing this article, there are seven episodes, one published every week. The insight of both Anderson and his guests will bring both comfort and catharsis to those listening.

One of the biggest themes that Anderson continues to touch upon is the feeling that you are alone in grief, when in fact, we will all feel the loss of a loved one, if we are “lucky” enough. That is to say, that we are lucky enough to live long enough to witness the passing of a loved one.

Guests include Television Host Steven Colbert, who lost his father and two brothers when he was just ten years old. Actor Molly Shannon speaks to Anderson in episode four. She lost her mother, sister and cousin in a car accident when she was a child.

Every episode speaks to a different type of loss. As many of you know, not all grief is the same. Episode five deals with anticipatory grief, which so many families go through when they slowly lose a loved one to Alzheimer’s and other progressive diseases.

Hospice and Palliative Care Physician, BJ Miller is interviewed by Anderson in episode three. BJ co-wrote a book called A Beginner’s Guide to the End: Practical Advice for Living Life and Facing Death , which is a must-read for everyone, regardless of how far away death might feel. He speaks to Anderson about his life-changing accident when he was a sophomore in college where he ended up losing his legs and a part of one arm. He later lost his sister to suicide.

The great thing about the podcast is you don’t have to listen to the episodes in order. With every listen, there is an extra glimmer of insight that comes. We are sure that you will find this podcast just as powerful and insightful as we did.

You can find Anderson’s podcast here, iTunes, or wherever you get your podcasts.
