Annual Showing of “Elf” a Success!

Memorial Funeral Home’s annual showing of “Elf” at The Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, Rhode Island was a success with 125 people in attendance.

The showing took place at 1:30pm on December 12th and was to benefit the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Instead of paying an admission fee, attendees were asked to bring canned or packaged food items to donate to the community center’s food pantry.

According to Alyson Novick, MLK’s director of development, 388 pounds of food were donated. “Given the limitation on seating, that’s a really, really great amount,” Novick said. “We’re super grateful.” She continued.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center offers a daily breakfast program, food pantry and a monthly food delivery program as well as educational, community and holiday programs for those in need on Aquidneck Island and beyond.

Memorial Funeral Home has partnered with Jane Pickens Theater for several years to bring awareness to the mission of the MLK Jr. Community Center as well as encourage food donations to the pantry. In 2020, the annual showing of “Elf” was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thankfully, this year the showing was allowed to proceed, although due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, there was a reduced capacity at the theater and a mask mandate in place in order to give viewers adequate protection. Despite the ongoing pandemic, it didn’t stop people from showing up.
