Potter League’s Annual Meeting: A Presentation on Pet Loss
The Potter League for Animals will host its annual year-end review at the Wyndham Newport Hotel on January 26th from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. This year’s event will include a presentation by Dr. Michelle Kay Crossley, PhD, LMHC, NCC, an assistant professor at Rhode Island College. In 2022 Dr. Crossley co-authored a research paper called Overcoming the social stigma of losing a pet: Considerations for counseling professionals .
The research centers around the stigma associated with pet loss and the need for more social support for someone grieving a loss of a pet. Particularly, offering counselors perspectives on tools and techniques that can help someone grieving.
Dr. Crossley completed her doctoral studies at North Carolina State University in 2013. She is the vice-president of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB). Dr. Crossley began volunteering with the organization as the newsletter editor and became a board member in 2012. Since then, she has worked with the organization to revise their pet loss grief specialist training and began a professional support group for pet loss and veterinary professionals.
Originally from Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley moved back to Rhode Island in 2012 and began working in the mental health field. She became independently licensed in 2017 and began a small private practice in Pawtucket called “Michelle Crossley Counseling”. She also serves as the president of the Rhode Island Mental Health Counselors Association.
